New mom Ally Hilfiger talks all things mother-daughter

Q My mother Susie always…
Told me to be my own person, none of this cookie cutter nonsense.

Q My favorite thing about my mother is…
She is uninhibited and a strong creative being.

Q I vividly remember my mom…
Putting fresh flowers and little notes on our beds at night.

Q The best Mother’s Day gift I ever gave was…
Long letters, and one year a set of Hermes’ gardening tools.

Q The best lesson I’ve learned from my mother was…
Treat everyone equally.

Q The most important trait I would like to pass on to my daughter Harley is…
That she be kind, creative, have a positive outlook on life, and my mom’s killer skin!

Q I hope to be the kind of mother that…
Respects my daughter’s decisions. I believe it’s my job to show Harley what has worked for me and what didn't, and then letting her make her own choices and mistakes, and being there for her if she falls.

Q The biggest challenge I’ll face as a mother today is…
Technology. The internet, TV, cell phones, it's a world beyond being afraid that a stranger in a van will offer her candy.

Q We hear so much about multi-tasking these days, but also the importance of quality time. How do you see yourself balancing?
As a mom, my priority is the well being of my daughter. Period. Sometimes that means making sure that I eat well and get some sleep in order to be the best and most present mom that I can possibly be. I’ve also found that taking 15 minutes to breathe and regroup can make a huge difference for both of us.

Q Tell us about that moment when you said or did something as an adult, and thought to yourself, I’ve become my mother.
The way I talk to my baby now is exactly the way my mom spoke to all of her children as babies -- with elated excitement and a huge smile.

Q My favorite thing to do with my daughter is…
Take a bath. She just turned three months old so it’s soothing and sweet for both of us.
